Italy has carried out a test on an improved version of the Oto Melara-developed Marte air-to-surface missile. The test, which was carried out at the Salto di Quirra test range in Sardinia, used a Marte Mk2 prototype equipped with new electronic components, including a new guidance system. The missile was launched with only the booster providing thrust, without the main rocket motor and warhead. The Mk2 version of the missile is lighter and smaller than the Mk1, allowing it to be carried and launched by the Agusta Westland EH101 and NH Industries NH90 helicopters that are scheduled to enter service in Italian navy rotary-wing units in the anti-ship roles.
