Matador infrared countermeasures (IRCM) system from BAE Systems (W300) received a boost yesterday when the US Department of Homeland Security granted it certification as an approved product for homeland security.
Dr Charles McQueary, under-secretary for science and technology, also designated the system as having Qualified Anti-Terrorist Technology status. BAE says Matador is the only IRCM system to have received approval under the Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act of 2002.
Matador systems – Export Matador and Biz Jet Matador – are lamp-based infrared missile jammers that can be deployed on fixed-wing aircraft to defeat first-generation IR missiles. Once turned on prior to flight, they operate continuously without operator intervention.
