The US military has launched an investigation into a 29 December accident in which a Special Operations Command Lockheed Martin MC-130H Combat Talon II was written off at an air base in northern Iraq. Ten of the 11 personnel on board were injured when the aircraft struck an area of runway under reconstruction during a night landing. The aircraft lost part of its undercarriage, its port wing beyond the number two engine and also suffered a fire to its starboard wing. The crew of another aircraft are believed to have filed a safety hazard report to the air force after earlier avoiding the unmarked work area.
