The US Federal Aviation Administration has issued revised medical standards for pilots, in which holders of third-class medical certificates under age 40 must re-certify every three years. Pilots over 40 must re-qualify every two years. Airline and commercial pilots over 50 must undergo annual vision tests to make sure they can read instrument panels. Heart replacement, permanent cardiac-pacemaker implantation and cardiac-valve replacement will be disqualifying heart conditions for all classes of certification. A waiver can be attained for pilots whose heart conditions are deemed stable.
