Refined satellite data has led investigators to conclude that the missing Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was lost over the southern Indian Ocean, off the western coast of Australia.
Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak told a briefing that the conclusion was based on analysis from Inmarsat and the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
"Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they’ve been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path," said Razak.
Based on this effort, he added, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 "flew along the southern [search] corridor and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth".
He says the flight "ended in the southern Indian Ocean". Further details will be released on 25 March.
Flight MH370, with 239 occupants, has been missing since contact with the aircraft was lost, on 8 March, during a service to Beijing.
