US display-technology company Microvision has signed an agreement with Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab, covering joint research into advanced display systems, including Microvision's virtual-retinal-display (VRD) technology.

VRD technology allows electronic images and information to be projected on to the retina of the viewer's eye using a low-power, fast-scanning, beam of light. This creates a high-resolution full-motion image with no screens.

Under the agreement, Microvision will develop two high-resolution helmet-mounted-display technology demonstrators for use in an aircraft simulator. The demonstrators will be multi-use platforms which can then be adapted for "a variety of potential future products", says Saab.

Saab and Ericsson Saab Avionics will also work with the US company to investigate development of VRD technology for military aircraft, weapons-sighting systems, and ground troop and vehicle applications. The agreement also covers the exploration of applications in portable devices for aerospace and defence applications, as well as industrial and commercial markets.

Ericsson Saab will contribute its experience in electronic cockpit displays and helmet-mounted displays for both military and commercial applications.

The initial phase of the contract is scheduled for completion in October, with the delivery of the prototype Microvision systems.
