Etihad grows up fast

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways says it will carry three million passengers this year, with 4 million anticipated in 2007. Its cargo division will transport 100,000t of freight in 2006 with double that amount forecast next year. The carrier, which only launched operations in November 2003, will serve 37 destinations by year-end.

Sharjah airport expands

Sharjah airport is looking to recruit new carriers, in particular from Europe, to coincide with the June 2007 opening of new departure and arrival halls. Sharjah Airport Authority director general Ghanem Al Hajri says the expanded terminal, with capacity to handle 8 million passengers a year, gives it an opportunity to approach new carriers. Al Hajri says fast growth at Air Arabia, which will account for over 50% of its 3 million passengers in 2006 and has driven 30% annual traffic growth at the airport, has prevented the airport from accommodating other carriers.
