A -1 Ching-KUO

Deliveries of Taiwan's Indigenous Defence Fighter (IDF) are to be completed by the end of 1998, having begun in early 1992. With Taiwan's purchase of 150 Lockheed Martin F-16A/Bs, the programme has been cut to 130 aircraft - 102 single-seat and 28 two-seat - rather than the original 250. The Ching-Kuo is replacing Lockheed F-104s and the Northrop F-5s. AIDC has looked at using the aircraft as the basis of a lead-in fighter trainer for the Taiwanese air force.

Powered by two local International Turbine Engines F125 reheated turbofans, the Ching-Kuo was designed with aid from General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) and resembles a heavily modified F-16. The IDF is optimised for air-superiority and air-defence roles, but can be used for anti-ship missions. Armament includes locally developed Sky Sword 2 air-to-air and Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles

AT-3 TSU-CHIANG

AIDC has developed a single-seat attack variant of its AT-3 jet trainer. Some AT-3As are being upgraded to AT-3B close-support aircraft, with Northrop Grumman APG-66 radar, head-up display and 1553B databus.
