Rafale

Under revised procurement plans, the French air force will not field the first of its 294 Rafale multi-role combat aircraft until 2005. French navy procurement of 60 Rafales has also been delayed, with the first half squadron of aircraft expected to enter service in 2002.

The single-seat Rafale C and two-seat Rafale B will meet the French air force requirement to replace the Dassault Mirage III, Mirage 5, Mirage F1 and Sepecat Jaguar. The Rafale M is a single-seat carrier-based aircraft which is designed to meet the French navy requirement to replace Vought F-8E(FN) Crusaders and Dassault Etendard IVs.

The Rafale is a 10t-class (empty weight) aircraft, powered by two Snecma M88 afterburning turbofans, equipped with a Thomson-CSF RBE2 phased-array radar and armed with Matra BAe Dynamics Mica medium-range air-to-air missiles and Apache stand-off air-to-surface weapons.

Mirage 2000

The United Arab Emirates has announced its intention to purchase up to 30 Mirage 2000-9 variants of Dassault's multi-role fighter, while also upgrading its existing Mirage 2000s to a similar standard.

The current production version is the improved Mirage 2000-5, with Thomson-CSF RDY multi-mode radar and upgraded cockpit. Deliveries of of 60 Mirage 2000-5s to Taiwan began in 1996, while the first of 12 Qatari aircraft was handed over in 1997. The French air force is converting Mirage 2000Cs to 2000-5 standard. The 2000-5 is being offered in competitions under way in Chile and South Africa.

Mirage F1

production of the Mirage F1 ended in 1989, but upgrades continue and Dassault is understood to be refurbishing Morocco's F1s. The South African air force had shown interest in upgrading its F1s, and two aircraft were fitted with Klimov RD-33 engines, but the type has been withdrawn from service because of defence cuts.

Super Etendard

French Navy Super Etendard strike fighters are being upgraded as an interim step until they are replaced by the Rafale M. A Thomson-CSF self-protection system is being fitted, including a Barem jammer pod and Sherloc radar-warning receiver.

The French navy has cut its nuclear-capable Super Etendard squadrons - the aircraft carries the Aerospatiale ASMP nuclear stand-off missile - from two to one.

Atlantic I/Atlantique ATL2

Germany has delayed plans to replace its Breguet-built Atlantic I twin-turboprop maritime patrol aircraft. It will instead upgrade them to extend their lives into the next century.

The improved Atlantique 2 first flew in May 1981 and entered service with the French navy in October 1989, with a total of up to 28 to be delivered. The ATL2's mission system includes the Thomson-CSF Iguane search radar, Sadang acoustic processor, Arar ESM and a Tango FLIR in a chin-mounted turret. Dassault is now proposing an improved Atlantique 3.

Guardian 2

A maritime-surveillance variant of the Dassault Falcon 200 business jet, the Guardian 2 is equipped with the Thomson-CSF Varan radar. The French navy has five "maritime-surveillance" Falcon 50s and also operates Guardians.
