Tornado

The UK Royal Air Force has taken delivery of the first of 142 Tornado strike aircraft being upgraded to the GR4 standard. Deliveries are due to be completed by 2002.

The mid-life update is intended to improve the aircraft's covert operational capability and includes a global-positioning system, FLIR sensor and night-vision-compatible cockpit. Germany and Italy are also upgrading their Tornado interdictor/strike (IDS) aircraft.

With the completion of the 35 electronic combat and reconnaissance aircraft for the German air force in 1994, the only aircraft in production is the second batch of 48 interdictor strike aircraft for Saudi Arabia, taking the order book to 974. Saudi deliveries began in 1996 and will be completed in 1998.

Production of the air-defence variant (ADV) is complete.
