JAS39 Gripen

The Swedish defence ministry ordered a third batch of JAS39s in June 1997, covering the purchase of a further 50 single-seat and 14 two-seat aircraft. An initial batch of 30 production JAS39A lightweight multi-role fighters for the Swedish air force was ordered in 1982, followed in 1992 by a second batch of 110, including 14 JAS39B two-seaters. Batch 1 deliveries began in 1993 and the last Batch 2 aircraft will be delivered in 2002.

The first JAS39B was flown in 1996 and deliveries will begin in 1998. Saab and BAe are collaboratively working on an export variant of the Gripen, which has been offered to Chile, South Africa and certain East European countries. The Swedish defence ministry is also looking at future upgrades to the Gripen including thrust-vector control, a phased-array radar and an infrared search and track sensor.

J35J Draken

The Swedish air force upgraded 64 J35F Drakens to J35J standard between 1987 and 1991 to maintain effectiveness into the late 1990s.

The J35J life-extension programme included an extensive system update, with a modified radar and improved infrared sensor.

340AEW&C

Deliveries of the Saab 340 AEW&C (airborne early-warning and command and control) aircraft to the Swedish air force are now under way.

The aircraft is a variant of the Saab 340B regional airliner modified to carry the Ericsson Erieye phased-array.

The Saab 2000 regional airliner is also offered as a platform for the Erieye mission system, and the aircraft will accommodate up to five operator consoles.
