Lockheed Martin has been given the go-ahead to build a third $491 million Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) military communications satellite, to be launched in 2011. The first geosynchronous-orbiting satellite is to be launched in 2008, two years later than originally planned, to replace US Milstar satellites. The 2001 AEHF contract was enlarged in 2003 to include a rapid reconfiguration payload, but a potential order of a fourth satellite was cancelled in 2004.
