Uruguay wants to purchase Elbit Systems’ Skylark I-LE unmanned air vehicle, with senior officials from the nation having recently observed the type being operated by ground units of the Israeli Defence Forces.
An acquisition of two systems is desired, to support Uruguay’s ability to monitor areas with a potential for terrorist activity.
With a maximum take-off weight of 7.5kg (16.5lb), the Skylark I-LE can be launched by infantry personnel, or deployed using vehicle-mounted configurations, including on-the-move operation. The UAV has been employed extensively by Israeli forces as a battalion-level system – primarily in support of artillery units – and also delivered to more than 20 operators worldwide.
Elbit says the UAV can be operated in a highly autonomous mode, including a fly-by-camera function enabling day or night detection and tracking of fixed or moving targets. It carriers an electro-optical/infrared sensor package and a laser illuminator for targeting purposes.

The UAV can be flown to a maximum altitude of 15,000ft, has a 3h endurance and a mission range of 27nm (50km).
