A UK SATELLITE, to be used by schools to enhance education and to stimulate interest in space science and the Earth's near-space environment, may be launched to celebrate the Millennium, with financial support from the Millennium Commission.

The Millennium Satellite Centre has been established to build, launch and operate the microsatellite, and to provide a comprehensive range of education services to support teachers and schools.

The project is being co-ordinated by the Royal Grammar School, Guildford and the nearby Surrey Satellite Technology, which has built several small satellites.

Data from the satellite will be freely available to all UK schools, using low-cost receivers. The spacecraft will be equipped with Earth imaging cameras; communications and messaging systems; and science experiments.
