The US Department of Defense has awarded two $8 million contracts for the concept definition study phase of the National Missile Defense (NMD) Lead Systems Integrator programme. Boeing North American received one award. The other went to United Missile Defense Company, a joint venture involving Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and TRW. The programme is intended to develop a system to protect the USA from a ballistic missile attack. An NMD system could be deployed by the USA as early as 2003.
