Matra BAe Dynamics has announced the sale of Mistral surface-to-air missiles to an unnamed South American country in a deal worth "hundreds of millions of French Francs."

Company spokesman Frederic Aragon says four South American countries have already selected the lightweight SAM.

Some 15,000 missiles have been ordered to date, with Brazil and Chile being two South American users.

"This is a significant sale," says Aragon. "The new users will employ it with ground and naval forces."

* Aragon adds that his company is in "active discussions" with the UAE Air Force to supply the MICA for use on the proposed Mirage 2000-9, and retro-fitting to Mirage 2000s already in service in the country.
