Iberia chief executive Luis Gallego foresees the carrier's maintenance arm servicing CFM International Leap engines at its overhaul shop in Madrid.
CFM confirmed on 19 June that Iberia parent IAG had picked the Leap-1A to power a total 55 Airbus A320neo-family jets scheduled for delivery to the Spanish carrier and its stablemate British Airways from 2018. The engine maker noted that the deal includes a comprehensive, hour-based service agreement.
Nonetheless, Iberia intends to develop its own in-house maintenance capabilities on the engine type, chief executive Luis Gallego told FlightGlobal at the Paris air show on 20 June.
Today, Iberia Maintenance's overhaul capability spans the CFM56 series and International Aero Engines V2500s, its website indicates.
Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that Iberia and Iberia Express have a total of 63 A320ceo-family jets powered by CFM56s.
On 19 June, Pratt & Whitney confirmed that its PW1100 engine had been tentatively selected by IAG for 47 A320neo-jets. The airline group's budget unit Vueling has 47 A320neos on order.
