The MTR390 turbo-shaft engine will power some 427 Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopters for the French and German armies, but two significant potential orders were lost when The Netherlands and the UK decided to order the US McDonnell Douglas Apache instead.
Developed specifically for the Tiger by MTU, Turbomeca and Rolls-Royce, the MTR390 provides 875kW of maximum continuous power and 960kW at take-off.
In view of the relatively small Tiger order book, the MTR consortium will be looking at other potential applications for the MTR390.
