UK-based tour operator MyTravel will launch a low-fares scheduled carrier from a "major UK airport" in October using two Airbus A320 aircraft.

Serving 10 international destinations initially, and expanding in summer 2003, the airline is forecast to be in profit by end of year two, after losses of £4-5 million in the first year.

Former MyTravel UK chief executive Richard Carrick, who is to launch the carrier, says the company is positioned to get a piece of a rapidly growing market. MyTravel Airways, formed from UK airline Airtours International and Scandinavian Premiair, sells one million seats annually, and is "the UK's lowest cost airline", he says. "As a charter, we have very high [aircraft] utilisation and load factors."

The two A320s will come from MyTravel's existing 49-strong narrowbody fleet. Route details have not been disclosed.
