Scott Horowitz, a former astronaut and veteran of four Space Shuttle missions, will start work early next month as the US space agency’s associate administrator for the exploration systems mission directorate. He will oversee the development of NASA’s new spacecraft, the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV), its launcher and the heavylift 125t-to-low-Earth-orbit booster. Horowitz is currently the director of exploration and space transportation at US rocket engine manufacturer ATK Thiokol. ATK produces the Space Shuttle solid-rocket booster that will be used for the CEV launcher and the former system’s heavy booster.
