NASA plans to test a microwave-powered spacecraft by year-end, using the Cosmos 1 solar sail. NASA is to beam microwave energy from the earth to "push" Cosmos 1 along, while future systems would harness the energy onboard.
This could reduce space travel costs to 1% of Space Shuttle costs within 20 years, as fuel will not have to be carried onboard.
