NASA HAS BEGUN Phase III of its high angle-of-attack (AoA) research project with the McDonnell Douglas F-18 high alpha research vehicle (HARV). This phase includes evaluating a set of nose-mounted strakes for yaw control. The strakes open independently, or collectively, to interact with vortices shedding off the nose cone, and produce a side force, which can be used to control yaw at high AoAs. Some 65 test flights are planned by the end of the year.
