A 15m (49ft) resolution combined visible-infrared Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) image from the Terra Earth Observing System polar platform has been released by NASA. The picture shows a 14x14km (8.7x8.7mile) area of Washington DC. Vegetation appears red, buildings and paved areas light blue and the Anacostia and Potomac rivers black. Buildings such as the White House, the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument, as well as the national airport, can be identified. Image product data derived from ASTER images include surface spectral radiance, surface temperature, digital elevation maps, surface composition, vegetation maps, cloud cover, sea/polar ice and natural hazard identification.
