Japan’s Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA) has awarded contracts for the construction of a new crew training centre and maintenance hangar, as it continues to forge its independence from former shareholder All Nippon Airways (ANA).

The dedicated cargo carrier says in a statement that it has awarded a contract for the construction of its new crew training centre to local company Taisei, while also awarding a contract to Nippon Steel Engineering for the planning and construction of an engineering and maintenance hangar.

It says the training facility is to be built near Tokyo Narita airport and construction is due to begin next month. Earlier this year it ordered a full-flight Boeing 747-400F/-8F simulator from CAE and the device will be located at the new centre.

NCA says its maintenance hangar will be built within the engineering and maintenance complex at Narita airport and construction will begin in January. It will be able to house one 747 and will be operational in spring 2009.

The carrier previously relied on ANA for support in all areas of its operations but has been forging its independence since ANA sold its minority stake in 2005.
