Ecuador’s second largest city Guayaquil is seeing a revival of international connectivity as eight airlines announce or launch new flights to Colombia, Spain, Mexico, the USA and Venezuela.
Oneworld carrier Iberia has announced nonstop service from Madrid to Guayaquil from 13 December. The route will be operated four times weekly with Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
Madrid-based Plus Ultra Airlines also plans to begin service from Madrid to Quito and Guayaquil on a triangular routing, operating with Airbus A340-300s.
Copa Airlines low-cost subsidiary will enter Guayaquil with flights from Bogota beginning 3 August, operating twice weekly with Boeing 737-700s. The Ecuadorian city will be Wingo's third new international route to launch this year, following Curacao and Santo Domingo.
Wingo’s Medellin-based low-cost competitor Viva Air Colombia obtained in April the authority to offer a daily Airbus A320-operated flight between Bogota and Guayaquil. The airline has not firmed up a launch date, but says it is also considering Guayaquil service from Santa Marta.
Likewise, Mexico's Interjet has authority to offer daily flights to Guayaquil from Mexico City and Cancun, but has not announced launch dates. Earlier this month, Aeromexico began thrice weekly service from Mexico City.
JetBlue Airways also previously announced plans to begin Guayaquil service from New York John F Kennedy, beginning in December with the Airbus A321neo. The New York-based airline already operates to Guayaquil from Fort Lauderdale.
Ecuador’s TAME briefly operated to New York JFK from Guayaquil with A330s but struggled to be profitable on the route.
Earlier this year, Venezuela’s Laser launched new service connecting Guayaquil with Caracas on Boeing MD-82 aircraft.
