JetBlue Airways will relocate its Houston operations to Houston Intercontinental, operating its last flights out of Houston Hobby on 26 October.
The New York-based carrier will fly from Houston Intercontinental's terminal A a day later on 27 October, operating existing service to Boston and New York John F Kennedy.
"The move to Bush Intercontinental is aimed at strengthening JetBlue’s relevance in New York and Boston, while also growing the carrier’s customer base in Houston where travellers love the airline’s award-winning service and competitive fares to and from the Northeast," says JetBlue.
The airline will be the only carrier operating nonstop between Houston Intercontinental and New York JFK, Cirium schedules data show. It will compete against United Airlines on nonstop service to Boston.
Other carriers operate to other New York City airports from Intercontinental: Delta Air Lines and United both fly to LaGuardia, while Spirit Airlines and United serve Newark.
JetBlue's departure from Hobby will leave only three airlines operating at the airport: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines. Southwest operates the lion's share of capacity out of the smaller airport in Houston, with a 94% share, Cirium schedules data show.
American and Delta each operate a single route out of Hobby, serving their respective hubs at Dallas/Fort Worth and Atlanta.
Separately, JetBlue plans to launch new nonstop service between New York JFK and San Jose, Costa Rica from 1 November. The airline already serves San Jose from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.
It plans to operate thrice weekly between New York and the Costa Rican capital, with Airbus A320 aircraft.
JetBlue will compete indirectly against United, which flies nonstop between Newark and San Jose.
