Jetstar Japan will become the only carrier to serve Shimojishima airport in Okinawa when it launches services there from Tokyo Narita airport on 30 March.
The service will operate daily with Airbus A320s, although the frequency will drop to four-times weekly during some periods in May and April.
The new flight will co-incide with the opening of a new passenger terminal at Shimojishima airport. The terminal, built and operated by Mitsubishi Estate, will cater to future international and domestic flights, as well as private jets.
Originally built in 1971, Shimojishima airport has largely been used as a training airport for commercial jets. Commercial services started in 1980, but were cancelled in 1994 due to low demand.
