Australian budget carrier Jetstar will launch thrice-weekly services between the Gold Coast and Seoul Incheon from 8 December.
The carrier will operate the services with Boeing 787-8s and will be the only carrier to serve the route. Jin Air has previously operated charter flights between Incheon and Cairns, but there has been no scheduled low-cost carrier services between Australia and South Korea.
“Research shows that South Korean travellers consistently rank Australia as the top destination they want to visit, but they were unlikely to travel without low-cost direct flights,” says Jetstar group chief executive Gareth Evans.
“South Koreans already travel more frequently than any other nationality in the Asia Pacific, so there’s no doubt they will take advantage of these new direct flights to Australia.”
Jetstar adds that Korean carrier Jeju Air plans to codeshare on the services, subject to regulatory approval. Cirium schedules data shows that it will be the first codeshare tie-up between the two low-cost carriers.
