Kuala Lumpur International airport began runway upgrading works on 2 October, on track with the schedule.
Operator Malaysia Airports (MAHB) says runway 3 will undergo partial and night closures over a 9.5 month period until 15 July 2020. The works will mainly involve payment overlaying, which will address potential future issues such as airfield pavement roughness that was identified in a Boeing Bump Index analysis conducted in 2018.
“This initiative to upgrade the runways is crucial to ensure the continuous safety and service levels of flight operations at [Kuala Lumpur]. In doing this, our focus is also to make sure that passenger travel plans are not disrupted,” says MAHB’s group chief executive Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin.
In September 2018, MAHB announced that it will upgrade Kuala Lumpur airport’s three runways between 2019 and 2023.
Following the completion of runway 3’s upgrade, runway 1 will be upgraded in 2021, followed by runway 2 in 2023.
