Qantas has wasted little time in laying claim to the two additional daily slots at Tokyo Haneda International airport, filing an application that would allow it to boost its frequencies there from Sydney and launch a new service from Melbourne.
The airline’s filing with Australia’s International Air Services Commission shows that it aims to commence the Melbourne-Haneda service from 29 March 2020 using Airbus A330s, which would replace its existing Melbourne-Tokyo Narita flights.
In addition, it would also launch its second daily Sydney-Haneda service, which Qantas argues would offer more choice and convenience for travellers. That would be operated by A330s or Boeing 787-9s.
Cirium schedules data shows that Qantas competes with All Nippon Airways on the Sydney-Haneda route, while Japan Airlines serves Sydney from Narita.
Qantas also flies from Brisbane to Narita, and Sydney to Osaka Kansai.
The Commission has invited other carriers to apply for the Haneda slots, with submissions due by 24 September.
