Star Alliance carrier SAS is to commence international services to the newly-created Scandinavian Mountains airport, including a link to London Heathrow.
Scandinavian Mountains airport is scheduled to open in mid-December. It is located near the Norwegian-Swedish border, about 180km north-east of Oslo and 350km north-west of Stockholm.
The airport recently received the IATA designator code 'SCR' which, according to its operator, enabled airlines to finalise route planning for the upcoming winter season.
SAS is to open three routes to the airport, operating weekly from London Heathrow and Aalborg and twice-weekly from Copenhagen.
It says the flights, which begin on 28-29 December and run until the Easter holiday in 2020, will be conducted using Airbus A320neo jets.
The airport is located some 25min transfer time from the Salen resort in Sweden and 40min from Norway's Trysil skiing region.
"Short journey times, attractive timetables, combined with fantastic opportunities for skiing and other winter activities in the Swedish and Norwegian mountains, are what a lot of people are looking for," says SAS executive vice-president, commercial, Karl Sandlund.
Scandinavian Mountains has a single runway, 15/33, which is around 1,200m in length, and will be overseen through a digital air traffic control tower sited in Sundsvall.
