Wizz Air is to make Krakow its fifth base in Poland, under plans which will see the Central European budget carrier open 12 new routes from the airport in 2019.
The airline, which has served neighbouring Katowice airport since its launch in 2004, will base two Airbus A321s at Krakow next year. The first will be deployed from May and the second from September.
"We chose Krakow to be our newest base in Poland as we see the potential and the demand for low-cost travel in this city which is a popular tourist destination as well as a rapidly developing business hub," says Wizz Air deputy Chief executive Stephen Jones.
The carrier will operate a dozen routes, its first from Krakow, in 2019. That includes flights from London Luton, the carrier's biggest base and from which it has served Katowice since its launch.
FlightGlobal schedules data shows EasyJet already operates between Luton and Krakow.
Wizz will also serve Doncaster Sheffield in the UK, Italian cities Bari and Catania, Nice in France, Cypriot capital Larnaca, the Nordic cites of Billund, Olso and Turku, Kiev and Kharkiv in the Ukraine and Kutaisi in Georgia. Wizz had previously flagged plans to expand its operations at Kiev in 2019.
Wizz will fly twice-daily on Luton, daily on Oslo, and between two and five weekly flights on the other 10 routes.
The new base opens as Wizz shuts its Poznan base - though it will continue to operate five routes including Luton and Doncaster-Sheffield from the airport. Wizz also has based at Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw in addition to Katowice and, from next summer, Krakow.
