A new Canadian cargo carrier, Canada West Airlines, is preparing to launch long-haul freight operations following clearance from Transport Canada.

The Toronto-based startup has been under formation since last year and is in negotiations to acquire Boeing 747 freighters for scheduled cargo services to Frankfurt and Paris. Transport Canada has awarded the Calgary-based airline rights to operate three flights a week to each destination, with 747s.

The airline has been casting around for 747 freighters and is believed to have considered the lease of the Israel Aircraft Industries converted 747-100 freighter from Arkia Leasing.

Canada West has also been in discussions with Singapore Airlines about the acquisition of two 747s, including a -300 combi which had previously been destined for Fijian startup Fiji Airways.
