Delta Air Lines has gone outside of the airline industry in its search for a new leader, hiring Leo Mullin, currently vice chairman of Unicom and Commonwealth Edison, the Chicago-area power company, to replace Ronald Allen as president and chief executive of the USA's third-largest airline.

Delta has also named Gerald Grinstein as non-executive chairman of the board, and Maurice Worth, who served as Delta's acting chief executive, is made chief operating officer.

Mullin will concentrate on strategic issues while Worth, a long-time Delta manager, will run day-to-day airline operations. Prior to joining Unicom in 1995, Mullin was president of the First Chicago bank. His area of expertise is strategic planning.
