The Italian air force is advancing studies to find replacements for its Agusta-Sikorsky HH-3F and Agusta-Bell AB212 utility helicopter fleets. A preliminary operational requirement to replace the HH-3F has already been sent to Italy's defence staff for evaluation, with AgustaWestland's EH101 having emerged as a lead candidate for combat search and rescue (CSAR) duties. The formal selection process is, however, expected to lead to an international competition.

Currently the subject of a limited upgrade programme, the HH-3F provided CSAR and Special Forces support in Afghanistan, the Balkans and Iraq.

The AB212 replacement is also awaiting approval, but the air force seeks a new type to replace existing CSAR and Special Forces support aircraft. The fleet is now undergoing an improvement programme to add light armament for casualty and medical evacuation missions, but will ultimately be replaced by a modern type - potentially the AgustaWestland AW139.
