Although not displaying any aircraft at Le Bourget, Ilyushin is on the verge of launching a vitally important programme.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Moscow and Delhi had agreed to jointly produce a new multirole military transport aircraft, the Il-214T.

A joint enterprise has been created teaming Ilyushin, India's HAL, the Irkutsk Aircraft Production Organisation.

The aircraft is designed as a replacement for the Russian air force's ageing Antonov An-12 ‘Cubs' and An-26 ‘Curls' and for Indian An-32 transports .

Priced at $12-17 million, the Il-214 will be powered by a pair of PS-9 TVD or Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofans.

The PS-9 is also used by some Il-76 derivatives, and by the Tupolev Tu-334 airliner and the Beriev _Be-200 amphibian.

The aircraft is designed to carry 15-18.5 tonnes of freight or up to 80 paratroopers, while a planned civil Il-214-100 passenger variant will seat 100-130 passengers.

The Il-214 is 33.2m (109ft) long, with a span of 30.1m, and a maximum take-off weight of 55 tonnes. Range is quoted as 5,000km (2,700nm), with a claimed cruising speed of 850km/hr (460kt).
