Vietnamese air traffic control has received a boost with successful testing and implementation of the new hand-over function between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh at the Noi Bai Area Control Centre in Hanoi.

The new systems will be operational in July following a two-month period of on-the-job-training in Vinh and Noi Bai.

Contract

The original contract was awarded to Alenia Marconi Systems (AMS) in January 2000 for the provision of ATC equipment and services for the Hanoi FIR at the sites of Hanoi and Vinh.

Six months later, an additional contract was signed for Ca Mau airport which will become operational at the end of 2001.

These $10 million contracts, the first won by AMS in Vietnam - for the supply and installation of an ATCR 33 primary radar and three SIR-M secondary surveillance radars - provide additional capacity within Vietnamese airspace.
