Drone nav upgrade
The DaimlerChrysler Aerospace Dornier CL289 reconnaissance drone is undergoing a navigation systems upgrade by the addition of a Global Positioning System satellite navigation system, plus improved hardware and software for the onboard control computer. The new CL289 has just completed a successful first test flight, according to Dornier Defence and Civil Systems. Dornier forecasts test programme completion "within 16 months".
C-17 Tail
Flight tests are due to begin this month on a new, lightweight composite horizontal stabiliser for the Boeing C-17. The main difference compared with the current aluminium stabiliser is the composite construction of the torque box. The unit weighs 20% less than the present structure.
