A malware attack struck Boeing computers on 28 March, but the company insists the impact is contained.
“Our cybersecurity operations center detected a limited intrusion of malware that affected a small number of systems,” Boeing says.
“Remediations were applied and this is not a production or delivery issue," the company adds.
The story of the attack spread after a report by the Seattle Times, which cited an internal message sent by Mike VanderWel, chief engineer at Boeing Commercial Airplanes production engineering.
VanderWel’s message seemed alarming, reporting that the attack was “metastasizing rapidly out of North Charleston”, the site where Boeing assembles 787s and has an engineering centre.
The Seattle Times article linked the attack to the WannaCry ransomware virus, which the US government blamed on North Korea in December.
The report spread on social media and news sites, but Boeing says the reports are “overstated and inaccurate”.
