Mitsubishi Aircraft has signed a memorandum of understanding with a "prospective North American customer" to start formal negotiations on a deal for 15 SpaceJet M100s.
The Japanese airframer says deliveries of the regional jets would begin in 2024.
"Today's agreement reaffirms the market demand for a game-changing regional aircraft, particularly in the North American market," it adds.
Hisakazu Mizutani, the aiframer's president, states: "We are pleased to welcome a new airline to the SpaceJet programme. We have received strong interest in this product from many airlines. They recognise that this family of aircraft will provide them with the ability to give their passengers an excellent experience while also delivering unmatched performance, creating new profit potential."
Mitsubishi has sketched details of the new 76-seat M100 jet during the Paris air show and says it plans to formally launch the programme later this year.
