On 12 February, a Loral Vought Systems Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) was successfully fired from a ship for the first time. The test firing, which took place off the coast of southern California, was designed to assess the weapon's capability as a shipboard fire-support weapon. The Army says that the prototype Block 1A ATACMS was fired from a M270 launcher mounted on the deck of the USS Mount Vernon. It traveled 139km (75nm) to a target area.
