The optical monitor telescope aboard the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton space telescope has obtained one of the most striking UV pictures ever taken of the M81 galaxy in Ursa Major, better known as the Great Bear or Big Dipper, about 12 million light years away. Newton was launched in December 1999 by an Ariane 5 booster.
