Rolls-Royce (R-R) Deutschland chairman Dr Klaus Nittinger is leaving the engine manufacturer to take up a fleet planning consultancy role with Lufthansa. He is due to relinquish his post by the year-end, but will depart earlier if a suitable successor can be found.

Nittinger will not be directly employed by Lufthansa, but is due to become an advisor to the German giant and, according to industry sources, will also study possibilities for fleet co-ordination within the Star Alliance, of which Lufthansa is a founder member.

Prior to taking the helm at R-R Deutschland in August 1997, Nittinger spent 23 years at the Lufthansa Group. Loss-making R-R Deutschland became a wholly-owned subsidiary of its UK parent on 1 January this year after Germany's BMW Group decided to sell its 50% shareholding.
