US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and submarine constructor Newport News Shipbuilding has accepted a $2.1 billion merger offer from Northrop Grumman after the US Government threatened to challenge its deal with General Dynamics. The US Navy, meanwhile, has scrapped its DD 21 next-generation destroyer programme, for which General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman were competing, and replaced it with the DD(X), a smaller vessel which will form the basis of a family of warships ranging from the Littoral Combat Ship to the CG(X) future cruiser.
