According to the NTSB, Southwest Flight 649, inbound from Oakland with 119 passengers and a crew of five, was landing on runway 8 at the airport when the Cessna 172, performing the takeoff phase of a "touch and go" manoeuvre on an intersecting runway, passed within 61m (200ft) vertically and 3m laterally over the 737.
No one was injured in the incident, which occurred under a clear sky with visibility of 10mi (11km), says the NTSB.
