Myanma Airways has confirmed its interest in ATR 72-600s, by placing orders for six of the type and options on six more at the Farnborough air show today.
The state-owned carrier, which is to branded Myanmar National Airlines in the near future, will start taking delivery of the aircraft in 2015. Deliveries will run until 2017.
The airline in April told Flightglobal that it was in talks with ATR for the aircraft, which will replace its Fokker F28 regional jet and Xian Aircraft MA60 turboprop.The airline already operates three ATR 72s.
"The decision to continue with ATR for our short haul operations underpins the Myanma Airways (Myanmar National Airlines) long term strategy to build up not only a fleet of the world's most fuel efficient and reliable aircraft but also MRO station in Yangon International Airport," says managing director Than Tun. "These new generation airliners match perfectly Myanmar's market."
It is the second carrier from Myanma to order aircraft during Farnborough, after Air Mandalay yesterday placed a firm order for six MRJ90s.
