Air New Zealand has signed a firm order for 13 re-engined Airbus A320neos family aircraft and one additional baseline A320 at the IATA AGM in Doha today.
The order, for 10 A320neos, three A321neos and one current-generation A320, is valued at $1.6 billion at list prices. The neos, led by the A321s, will be delivered between 2017 and 2019, while the single baseline A320 will be delivered in 2015.
The airline’s order follows a competitive RFP process between Airbus and Boeing to replace its oldest A320s. ANZ has a fleet of 22 A320s, which fly trans-Tasman, Pacific Islands and domestic services.
“The new Airbus neo will help ensure we continue to operate one of the world’s youngest jet fleets and will further drive fuel efficiency, allowing us to minimise our carbon footprint,” says ANZ chief executive Christopher Luxon.
ANZ is still assessing the CFM International Leap-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G to power the new A320s. A decision is expected in December. The A320s already in its fleet are powered by International Aero Engines IAE V2500s.
Flightglobal’s Ascend Online Fleets database shows that ANZ still has five A320s from previous orders that are scheduled for delivery in 2014 and 2015.
