Orenda Recip is studying a smaller derivative of its new 450kW (600hp) OE-600A V-8 aero-engine for potential re-engineing of the Piper Malibu piston single and piston twins such as the Beech Duke.

The proposed liquid-cooled V-6 would deliver between 225kW (normally aspirated) and 370kW (turbocharged). General manager Peter Jackson says it would take three to four years to develop and certificate the V-6.

Re-engineing applications for the V-8 include the Raytheon Beech King Air C90 and Rockwell Twin Commander. Orenda is developing a 560kW turbocharged version, the first application for which is to re-engine de Havilland DHC-3s. Development of a full-authority digital engine control system is under way, and Jackson says the V-6 could lead a programme to certificate Orenda engines to run on low-octane, unleaded, automotive gasoline.
