The last flyable Boeing B-29 Superfortress is scheduled to arrived at 14:00 at the AirVenture fly-in Oshkosh, Wisconsin less than one year after returning from a five-year hiatus from the air show circuit.
The Confederate Air Force (CAF) “FiFi”, serial number SN44-62070, will be arriving at the rural Wisconsin airport after spending the weekend in Chicago, according to the CAF’s web site.
It will be FiFi’s first visit to Oshkosh since 1995, and the first since regaining airworthiness status last August. In 2005, CAF grounded the aircraft it had acquired in 1971 over engine reliability concerns. Restoration staff removed the bomber’s four Wright R-3350-57AM radial engines and installed a hybrid combining components of the R-3350-95W and R-3350-26WD.
The FAA then cleared the CAF to sell flight experiences aboard the venerable bomber.
In Oshkosh, the B-29 is scheduled to participate in the air show on 29 July as part of a special tribute to veterans.
