Pilot over-controlling during landing following a badly executed approach caused the July 1997 Federal Express Boeing MD-11 freighter crash at Newark International airport, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says. Investigators say the flight crew, who survived the crash should have executed a go-around after a bad approach and hard landing. Instead, they pushed the nose down, causing fuel to leak, which resulted in a fire. "The pilot chose the least desirable option of attempting to salvage a landing," the NTSB believes. The Safety Board said the probable cause of the crash was "the captain's over control of the airplane during the landing and his failure to execute a go-around".
